Your teeth may begin to shift. Wearing your retainer as directed helps protect your orthodontic results.
A retainer may feel snug, especially if you haven’t worn it as directed. If it is painful or won’t fit completely, don’t force it. Contact your orthodontist.
It’s common for teeth to feel unusually smooth or slightly different right after braces come off.
Ask your orthodontist or dentist before starting any whitening treatment. They can tell you if it’s a good time based on your teeth and gums.
Most people adjust within a week or two. Your tongue and lips just need time to get used to your teeth without brackets and wires in the way.
After eating with braces, rinse your mouth with water to help loosen food particles. Brush and floss as directed by your orthodontist, especially after meals or snacks, to keep plaque from building up around brackets and wires. A travel toothbrush, floss, and interproximal brush can make cleaning easier when you are away from home.
Some soft chocolates may be okay with braces, but you should avoid sticky, chewy, or hard candies like caramel, taffy, gummies, suckers, hard mints, and hard candy. Sticky candies can cling to braces, while hard candies can break brackets or wires. Sugary treats can also increase the risk of plaque buildup and white marks if teeth are not cleaned well afterward.
With braces, you should not eat foods that can break brackets, loosen wires, or get stuck in hard-to-clean places. That includes popcorn, nuts, hard candy, caramels, taffy, ice, hard chips, pretzels, hard pizza crust, bagels, hard rolls, and crunchy raw fruits or vegetables unless they are cut or cooked into a braces-friendly texture.
The best soft foods for the first week with braces are foods that are easy to chew and less likely to put pressure on sore teeth. Try oatmeal, scrambled eggs, soups, smoothies, yogurt, pasta, mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, soft cheeses, bananas, berries, and soft-cooked proteins like fish. As soreness improves, you can gradually return to more of your usual braces-safe foods.
