Introducing Smiles at 7 Day

What is Smiles at 7 Day?

Smiles at 7 Day is a yearly event, happening July 7, meant to raise awareness about the importance of seeing an orthodontist at age 7.

Why age 7? Isn’t that too early for braces?

Orthodontic treatment not only gives your child a beautiful smile; it sets the stage for a lifetime of healthy teeth.

We often think of braces as a part of adolescence. But you don’t have to wait until your child loses all their baby teeth to consult an orthodontist. In fact, by age 7, most children have enough permanent teeth to help an orthodontist spot — and treat — potential problems early enough to avoid more costly or more invasive procedures down the road.

What kinds of problems can early check-ups catch?

An orthodontist can spot crowding, misalignment, jaw growth issues, and bite problems early. In some cases, early treatment can guide the jaw and facial bones into a better growth pattern or create space for incoming permanent teeth, reducing or even preventing the need for more complex treatment down the road.

Do I need a dentist referral to see an orthodontist?

Not at all! Parents can schedule a consultation directly with an orthodontist, no referral needed. If something appears “off”, you don’t need to wait to see an orthodontist, even if your child is younger than 7. Regardless of age, you should take your child to an orthodontist the moment you notice an issue.

Is July 7 the only time my child can get checked?

Definitely not! Smiles at 7 Day on July 7 serves as an easy reminder that all children should see an orthodontist by age 7, but it’s not the only day your child can see an orthodontist!
